SUMMARY:Der letzte Mann
DESCRIPTION:Film & Musik\n\nD 1924\, Regie: Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau\, 90 M
 in\, ohne Dialog\n\n\n\n(english version below)\n\n\n\nDank seiner prächt
Welt zusammen.\n\n\n\nDER LETZTE MANN kommt fast vollständig ohne Zwische
fische Szenen intensiv erlebbar gemacht.
t uniform\, the doorman of his apartment building is admired as a figure o
f authority and respect. But when\, due to his age\, he is demoted to work
ing as a lavatory attendant and forced to wear a plain smock\, his small\,
orderly world collapses.\n\n\n\nTHE LAST MAN (Der letzte Mann) almost ent
irely dispenses with intertitles\, making it the first silent film to achi
eve this successfully. This is due in part to Emil Jannings’ remarkable
performance\, but also to the film’s technical virtuosity: Karl Freund
’s camera moves “unchained” through the spaces and visualizes the pr
otagonist’s inner life through the interplay of dream sequences\, dissol
ves and special effects. Such a strong subjectivization of the camera’s
gaze had never before been seen in German silent cinema.\n\n\n\nMATTHIAS H
IRTH (composition\, piano\, electronics) from newsoundKino has composed a
new soundtrack for the film and will accompany the screening live. The mus
ic draws primarily on the pulse of urban life\, shaped by hectic activity
and constant movement\, but also punctuated by small oases of calm.\n\n\n\
nThe score follows the rhythm of the images\, while detailed sound design
intensifies individual passages and subtle acoustic nuances make specific
scenes particularly vivid. Each moment of the 24-hour cycle is given its o
wn musical atmosphere: from the quiet twilight and lethargy of the morning
\, through the bustle of the late morning and the midday pause\, to the ec
centric pulse of the night. The result is a contemporary and distinctive s
oundscape that reflects the contrasts and contradictions of urban life.\n\
